Why can only women take part?
The Midnight Walk invites women of all ages and fitness levels to join together to help raise funds for their local hospices. The walk is about empowering women by being supported by women. Most women will know a family member or friend who has been affected by a terminal illness. There is something very special about a group of women joining together for a common cause and this is the only event in the hospice calendar, which excludes men from participation. We do however need lots of volunteers on the night so any men who would like to be involved please contact us about joining the Midnight Walk Volunteer Team.
How much does it cost to take part?
Standard Entry is £15. Earlybird Online Entry (available until 03/04/17) is £10. Your registration fee covers the cost of administration, your t-shirt, medal, and refreshments. This is so that all the sponsorship money you raise and any donations can go directly to helping our patients. You can also register on the night from 8:00pm for £25.
How long is the route?
The route is roughly 8 miles and there will be refreshments half way – remember it is not a race! This year the half way point will be at our new Hospice in Goldsworth Park.
Where does the walk go?
Starting at Woking Leisure Centre in Woking through Hook Heath, St Johns, Goldsworth Park, Horsell and then back to the Leisure centre.
Will it be safe?
Your safety is of utmost importance to us. The route will be well marshalled by volunteers and we have support from Surrey Raynet (The Radio Amateurs’ Emergency Network who patrol the route) and St John’s Ambulance.
How long will it take?
The walk will take between 2 – 3 hours for a fit walker, but there is no rush and we encourage walkers to go at their own pace. There will be lead walkers as well as people at the end of the walk to ensure the last participants return safely.
How old do you have to be?
You need to be 11 years of age or over on the event night, 19th May 2017. Any walker between the age of 11 and 17 must have their registration form signed by a guardian who is 18 years or over. The guardian must also be registered to take part in the walk and must be accompanying the adolescent on the walk on the night. Each guardian can only be responsible for three under 18 year olds and all 11-17 year olds and guardian forms must be sent together or online registrations completed at the same time.
Is the route suitable for children?
It is suitable for children aged 11 years and over (subject to walking with a guardian as detailed above.)
Are there toilets?
There will be toilets at the beginning and at the half way point, including disabled access toilets.
Do I need to be fit?
No you take it at your own pace, but we do recommend that you should train before taking part in the walk. All participants are responsible for their own medical condition, if in any doubt about your ability to finish the WSB Midnight Walk, please consult your doctor prior to commencing your exercise programme.
Will there be any refreshments?
We suggest you bring a bottle of water, there will be refreshments and a snack at the half-way point and you will be given a spare bottle of water at check-in.
Can I bring my dog?
No pets or animals are permitted at the Midnight Walk or on the event route except for guide dogs.
How much sponsorship do I have to raise?
Last year’s ‘Sponsorship Superstar’ raised an incredible £2,160, and the group who raised the most – and won the ‘Fundraising Fanatics’ Award – raised £10,694! However, this is to inspire you and not deter you. We do not ask for minimum sponsorship, only that in taking a valuable place in the walk you do your best for a very worthwhile cause. Last year we were able to raise over £120,000 via sponsorship, which was further enhanced by effective gift aid collection and match funding by employers. The cost of registering for the walk only covers our costs, so we do hope you will support us by fundraising as much as you can to make the walk a success!
How can I get sponsorship?
If you choose to raise sponsorship we will send you a sponsorship form in your registration pack and suggest you ask everyone you know to support you. Remind them to tick the gift aid box if they are eligible as this will increase their sponsorship by 25p per pound. You could also arrange a coffee morning or supper and ask people to donate for your hospitality. We also suggest you set up an online fundraising page via BT MyDonate. This should only take a couple of minutes and is a safe way for people to donate with a credit/debit card. BT MyDonate is the online fundraising platform we suggest to use, you can create individual pages that link to a team page, and enter a memorial if you are walking in memory of a loved one.

Get social – use Social Media to promote your event, both Facebook and Twitter have BT MyDonate integration and are the ideal platforms to promote your fundraising.
Who is eligible to tick the gift aid box?
If the person sponsoring you is a UK tax payer or pays Capital Gains Tax then you can make the donation worth even more. For every £1 you give to us we get an extra 25p.
Is the route suitable for wheelchairs?
The route has been assessed for wheelchairs and the same safety warnings are given regarding widths of pavements and the dark. There are a couple of areas that may pose access problems so we would advise you contact us prior to the walk if you have access requirements. We also request that any wheelchair users take part with an able bodied walker that can be responsible for ensuring their safety around the route.
Do I need special footwear or clothing?
Please wear your Midnight Walk T-shirt for training to raise awareness of the event and to encourage others to take part. Also wear the T-shirt on event night, so that we can easily see who is taking part in the walk. Comfortable footwear should be worn that you have trained in or worn before. Please wear sensible footwear e.g. trainers and avoid uncomfortable and impractical footwear such as stiletto heels.
Will there be parking on the night?
Parking will be available at Woking Leisure Centre car park with time restrictions. We advise that walkers are dropped off or car share if possible to avoid disappointment and congestion on the night.
What is included in my registration pack?
Your registration pack will include a confirmation letter, sponsorship forms and/or a donation form, fundraising hints & tips, the route map and important information for the event. It will also include your 2017 Midnight Walk t-shirt and walker number. Please make sure you fill in the medical form on the back of your walker number and bring it with you on the night.
When will I receive my registration pack?
Registrations are processed once a week. Therefore your registration pack may take up to 2 weeks to reach you. You will be able to collect your registration pack from our Fundraising Office free of charge. Collection is available Monday-Friday, 9am-6pm from Waterman House, Chertsey Road, Woking, GU21 5BW. If you select this option you will be emailed within 1-2 weeks when your pack is ready for you. Collection will only be available for registrations made before 09/05/17. Registrations made after this date and before the closing date of 15/05/17 will be mailed out by Tuesday 16th May so that it reaches you before the event day. If you have not received your registration pack by Thursday 18th May please contact us urgently.

Do I need to bring any cash with me on the night?
We do recommend bringing some cash with you as we will have merchandise on sale during Registration, a Raffle you can enter, and Face Painting. We will of course have the famous bunny ears for sale, superhero capes and masks for those who didn’t purchase on registration.
